AUTUMN TERM 2018

Church building in England

Starting on September 26th at 10 am there will be a series of 10 talks by Colin Canfield. Colin is a retired head teacher and a W.E.A. lecturer. He will be discussing the building of English churches from the very earliest times, circa 320A.D. up to 1901. He will begin by examining the development of church building from the Saxons through to the Tudors. He will then move on to look at the possibility of tracing the work of individual architects /masons in mediaeval architecture and the relationship between mediaeval architecture and local geology. We will also see how Stuart & Hanoverian church monuments reflect art and literature of the time. Lastly the development of architecture between the Stuarts and the Victorians will be shown. During the term there will be two outings to local churches.

We invite you to join us in the next set of lectures and hope you will be impressed by the facilities and location at the Old Fire Station which should prove to be a most convenient and accessible base for the Lecture Society. The series of 10 lectures costs £ 50. Each lecture lasts 90 minutes.
